The Underage Drinking Crisis in America Essay - 1030 Words

By definition and federal law, underage drinking is any person under 21 who are consuming alcohol. In 2011, Missouri had 258 total alcohol impaired fatalities. Forty-six, or thirty percent, of these fatalities were under the age of twenty-one (Century Council). Surely, it does not happen in small towns like Warrensburg. Yes, in fact, it does happen in Warrensburg, the reason being it is a college town, and Whiteman Air Force Base is just twenty minutes outside the town. Here are stories of underage drinking incidences that occurred in Warrensburg, Jackson County, and St. Joseph. In October 2008, UCM homecoming night, a second floor fight broke out in Club Blue, a bar down on Pine Street. First, what does Missouri law say about underage drinking? Secondly, what are some reasons that may cause minors to start drinking? Lastly, what are possible consequences of underage drinking? Background Missouri law has a lot to say when it comes to minors and their use of alcohol. Some laws are decent, while others are less decent. Let us examine the decent laws first. First, according to the APIS, Missouri law prohibits underage possession of alcohol with no exceptions. Next, State law, also prohibits any internal possession of alcohol by minors, with absolutely no exceptions. Third, the purchase of alcohol by minors is prohibited, with the exception of undercover law enforcement purposes. The next two laws are perhaps part of the problem of underage drinking. These two laws allow for the furnishing of minors with alcohol. Fourth, Missouri law says that furnishing minors with alcohol is prohibited, with the exception of a parent or guardian. Finally, the law of Missouri prohibits social hosting parties, which gives minors access to alcohol, again with the exception of family (APIS). Whatever Missouri law says about underage drinking; the law is only one part of the problem, w hat about the factors that lead minors to start drinking? Many factors may lead under aged citizens to drink, according to the National Institutes of Health. Here are just a few of them. There were numerous articles relating to the assigned reading and class instructions. Three of these articles are summarized below, then linked to the class material. Project Deliverables. For these projects that I was assigned, there were some deliverables. For the fire management display kit project, I created a manual using Microsoft word. The manual consisted of a table with pictures of each display item and a description. Lakmal’s intention was to have it printed and laminated for the visitor s display. I had some problems formatting this table with the pictures in a visually pleasing manner. However, for the most part, this was a fairly simple project. For the zoom scale project, I first delivered an excel document containing the ideal zoom scales for each park. Despite these preconceived thoughts, I was optimistic that an office at Parks Canada would not be a stereotypical office like those seen on TV and in movies. For the most part, my optimism met the reality. The office was well lit and the people were very nice. My workspace was also not what I expected. I had a full sized cubicle with two large monitors. A comfortable chair and cupboard space to put my things in. There are very large windows all along the outside of the building that are visible from my cubicle which helped liven up the atmosphere. I was even allowed to wear headphones while I was working, this was a big plus while doing some tedious work. I did not find it too hard to get used to working in these conditions, however, I do feel it could have gotten a little stale if it had been a full-time job. All in all, I would say I am less scared of working in an office setting then I was before this opportunity. I now feel like I have a much better understanding of how the government operates and what expectations are put on government employees. I would say that my role was a supporting role. Middle East Essay The Middle East has always been in conflict, from biblical times, to the crusades, and on through modern times. Since around 1900, the conflict has primarily been between two groups, Jews and Arabs. During this time, the British occupied the land and under their control the conflict remained minimal. But within months of their departure, and the division of the land between Israel and the surrounding Arab nations, war broke out. The Arabs were unhappy with the UNs divisions of the land, and in an attempt to obtain the land, which they believed was rightfully theirs; they attacked the State of Israel. To the surprise of many, the armies of Egypt, Syria and Jordan fell to Israeli troops and instead of gaining land, they lost it. Almost twenty years later war broke out once more. This time Egypt had blocked off the Straits of Tiran, which supplied most of Israels exports, and mobilized most of their fighting army on the border with Israel. Israel, instead of waiting for Egypt to attack first, Israel made the first move and attacked Egypt. Israel destroyed almost all of Egypts bombers while they were still on the ground. Syria and Jordan both responded to this attack with an aerial assault on a few Israeli bases and war was waged. The war only lasted six days, hence the name The Six-Day War, and during this time Israel more than doubled its territory. They secured the Golan Heights to the north, the hills of Judea and Summaria to the east, and the Gaza Strip and the Sinai desert to the south. Besides the Sinai Desert, which was returned to Egypt as part of a peace agreement, most of these lands are part of Israel today. The Yom Kippur War was latter fought between the same countries but in this war no territory was gained or lost. Palestinians, as they are now called, were the people that were left in the territories that were capture by Israel in the Six-Day War. Palestinians were unwanted by the countries of their origin, even specifically told to stay in Israeli refugee camps, and were forced to stay in Israel. The Palestinians now claim that the land is theirs and that Israel stole it from them. In response to the Israeli theft of their land, Palestinian terrorist groups have sent suicide bombers into prominent city squares, heavily populated markets, and on to multiple buses; all in the attempt of regaining the land that they believe is theirs. Even though these bombings occur virtually weekly, the rest of the world pushes Israel towards peace. Thousands of Israeli men, woman, and children have been killed, most of them civilians, and the US persuades Israel to make concessions, that they should surrender to the terrorists demands. Besides the fact that peace would be allowing terrorism to prevail, peace is an impossible proposition, because the man that Israel is negotiating peace with isnt part of the terrorist groups. Another Reason why peace is not a reasonable option for Israel, is they rightfully own the land and they have no reason to give it back. For these reasons, peace with the Palestinians isnt possible and isnt beneficial to Israel.2The United States demand for Middle East peace in hypocritical. Since the September 11th incident, they have been saying that they must strike in response and find Osama Ben Laden so they can show the world that terrorism wont be tolerated. Yet Israel is expected to tolerate terrorism. Since the attack the United States created a list of terrorist groups yet Islamic Jihad, Hamas, and Hezbola werent put on the list, they arent considered terrorist groups by the US. Groups that kill place bombs in populated areas and kill innocent civilians arent considered terrorists. Israel retaliates to these bombings in the same way as the US does yet Israel is shown admonished for these actions. The Palestinians wouldnt give up anything; Israel would be the one making the sacrifices. Israel won the war in 1967, they own the land, and have military superiority over the Palestinians who lack any semblance of army and Israel would be the only one making concessions.Israel owns the land in question; the Palestinians never owned that land but this land is treated as if it doesnt belong to Israel. On most American maps of the Middle East, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights are marked as disputed Territory. Yet even though they never owned the land they still claim it to be theirs.5These are reasons why the peace process shouldnt happen but even if it did happen it could never work. The Peace Process is an attempt to prevent terrorist activity, to stop innocent people from dying. Israel is trying to stop the terrorism, yet they talk to Yasser Arafat to make peace. They are trying to make a deal with a person who doesnt represent the terrorist groups, and cant control the terrorist groups. Yasser Arafat, the head of the PA is not affiliated with any terrorists; he is the leader of the Palestinian people. If Arafat doesnt control the terrorist groups he cant stop the violence, he isnt the person to create peace. If Arafat cant cause peace making a deal with him wont help anything. 6Ideally, people want the whole world to live in peace, unfortunately that isnt possible. True peace cant be found in the Middle East. The US doesnt see this; they keep talking of fixing the problem yet there only answer is a peace agreement. There is no reason, no gain, and no guarantee in peace with the Palestinians. It is not as if there is nothing to lose in it for Israel, they lose their land that their soldiers fought for and died for. Because an agreement cant be reached without Israel losing something that is has precious little of, an agreement cant just be tried or given a chance. Especially since Israel has the upper hand in this situation; which ends up being tied behinds its back, a little bit because of fear of war and a little bit out of lack of American support; it shouldnt be the one who is required to give up something for nothing. Through Emyn Muil, the Dead Marshes, around Saurons Black Riders, and Gate, to Mount Do om, and destroy the ring. For the other party in the story, their goal is to stop Saruman, and his army. First they get the help from Rohan, and its king. Then they travel for the dark tower, but they are slowed down by the millions of Orcs and corrupt men sent by Saruman. After many days of fighting, and many deaths they move onto the tower, to find its outer wall destroyed, all the guards that were left behind dead, and the holes where the Orcs worked flooded, by the tree people the Ents. Climax- The climax of this story is at the end of the first book, in this book (The book contains books 3 4, which separates the two parties and there dealings.), when the two armies are fighting, and the Orcs sneak in through an underground ditch. Then they seal it up, but again they sneak through it again, but are defeated again. Although the Rohan army wins, they had hardly any archers, unlike the Orcs with there poison tipped, black feathered arrows.
